Why we built Parlora Library: free where it should be free, $0.99 where it shouldn't

If you teach or learn English, you already know the pricing landscape doesn't make much sense. Paid ESL platforms typically ask $8–$15 a month — sometimes more — for access to materials that, for many users, get opened once and never again. Free repositories exist, but they come with their own costs: hours of searching, evaluating, and adapting before you find something usable.

We built the Parlora Library because that didn't sit right with us. ESL resources should cost what they're worth to use — not what subscription pricing forces them to cost.

The pricing problem

Most paid ESL platforms run on a subscription model. That works for power users — teachers using the platform daily, building lesson plans from it, downloading dozens of worksheets a month. For everyone else, it's overkill.

Consider a learner who wants three grammar worksheets to practise the present perfect over a weekend. On a typical subscription platform, they have two options: pay $10 for a monthly subscription they'll cancel in three days, or hunt through free repositories until they find something workable. Neither is reasonable.

Or consider a tutor preparing for one specific lesson with one specific student. They need one good worksheet on conditionals. The subscription is overkill. The free hunt is a tax on their preparation time.

Pricing should match usage. A grammar worksheet shouldn't require an ongoing financial commitment any more than buying a single book should commit you to a book-of-the-month club.

How we priced it

The Parlora Library has two prices: free and $0.99.

Creative Commons-licensed materials are always free. No sign-up wall, no friction tax, no "free for the first three downloads then subscribe". If it's CC-licensed, it's free. That's how the licence is supposed to work.

Paid documents are $0.99 each. One coffee buys you a hundred worksheets. We set the price centrally — creators don't price their own work — so a learner browsing the Library knows exactly what to expect.

An optional subscription, $7.99 per month, gives unlimited downloads for users who want them. That's there for the genuine power users — teachers building full courses, tutors with active client rosters — not as a pressure mechanism on everyone else.

The point of this structure is that it doesn't punish casual use. You can buy two worksheets for two dollars and walk away. You can browse the free catalogue indefinitely and never pay a cent. Or you can subscribe if that's actually what suits you. The choice is yours and it isn't dressed up as anything else.

On quality

A common worry with low-priced or free resources is whether they're any good. Fair concern. Here's how we handle it.

Every document in the Parlora Library is curated, moderated, and approved before publication. We screen for plagiarism using Copyscape, we check the metadata is correct, and we review each upload before it goes live. Documents that don't meet the bar don't go up.

Beyond that, our creators are working ESL teachers, tutors, and language professionals — the people who actually use these materials in lessons. They upload because they want their work to reach learners and teachers who'd otherwise pay subscription fees they don't need. They're paid per view, which means they're incentivised to upload genuinely useful material that people actually engage with, not to flood the catalogue with filler.

That said, no platform — ours included — can guarantee every document will be perfect for every user. What we can promise is that nothing on the Library got there by accident, and that you'll know before you click whether something is free or $0.99.

What the Library covers

The current ESL catalogue spans:

• Grammar references and worksheets across CEFR levels A1 to C2
• Vocabulary materials organised by topic, theme, and level
• Lesson plans for individual tutors and classroom teachers
• Exam preparation materials for IELTS, Cambridge exams, and general proficiency
• Reading and listening exercises with comprehension questions
• Speaking and conversation prompts for one-on-one and group practice
• Writing exercises and model answers for academic and general English

New documents are added regularly. The catalogue is growing as more creators join, and we're particularly focused on building depth across CEFR levels and topic areas where ESL learners and teachers most need support.

Who this is for

The Parlora Library makes sense if you're:

• A learner who wants targeted practice materials without committing to a subscription
• A self-study student working through CEFR levels and wanting structured worksheets to practise
• A tutor preparing lessons for specific students and topics, who needs flexibility rather than a fixed catalogue
• A classroom teacher building materials for specific lessons or units
• A parent supporting an English-learning child at home

If you're a power user — downloading dozens of resources a month — the $7.99 subscription is there. If you're not, you'll likely never pay more than a few dollars across a year of use.

What we don't do

In the interest of being clear about what we are and aren't:

• We don't claim every document is the best on the internet. We claim each one has been checked, approved, and is fairly priced.
• We don't lock free content behind sign-up walls. If it's free, it's free.
• We don't run a "first month free" subscription that auto-bills. The $7.99 is opt-in and clearly priced.
• We don't price by tier, package, or "premium content". Every paid doc is $0.99.

Pricing should be honest, predictable, and proportionate to what you're getting. That's what we've tried to build.
